Barrington, NH

Barrington bears the family name of the English governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall. Barrington was once the third largest New Hampshire town in population, ranking after Portsmouth and Gilmanton. Governor Shute, one of the first to promote new industries in the state, set aside a two-mile strip of land which would become part of Barrington for the purpose of securing and smelting iron ore on the Lamprey River.
